DESCRIPTION:Prof Sir Brian Hoskins will talk about what has driven his research and his journey in the climate change issue. \nProfessor Sir Brian Hoskins\, Faculty of Natural Sciences\, The Grantham Institute for Climate Change \nAfter degrees in maths\, I have spent my research career trying to further the understanding of how weather systems and the large-scale atmospheric motion work. This has brought me into very close contact with those who do weather forecasting and those who research into all aspects of climate change. I have given many talks on climate change over the past 50 years\, and I have been involved with the IPCC and climate policy related committees in the UK\, including the Climate Change Committee. My concern for doing all I can to help tackle the climate problem led me to be the Founding Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College. \nBrian Hoskins has been a Professor of Meteorology in the University of Reading for 40 years. In 2008 he became the Founding Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London and is now its Chair. \nHis research interest has been in weather and climate\, in particular the understanding and modelling of the motion of the atmosphere on all scales. \nHis international roles include vice-chair of the World Climate Research Programme\, President of the International Association of Atmospheric Sciences and being a member of the 2007 IPCC climate change assessment for which a Nobel Prize was awarded. \nIn the UK he was a member of the UK Climate Change Committee for its first 10 years. \nHe is a member of the science academies of the UK\, USA\, China and Europe. \nBrian received a CBE in 1998 and was knighted in 2007 for services to the environment \nFurther information here: My 50 Year Journey From Maths To Climate Change Activism Tickets\, Tue 6 Feb 2024 at 16:30 | Eventbrite
