SUMMARY:TALK: Restorative Connections with Rob Delius
DESCRIPTION:With our fragile planet facing huge environmental threats right now\, there is no better time to question our relationship with the natural world – how we can live more in harmony with our environment and invite the beauty of nature into our own lives\, physically and spiritually. \nRob Delius of Stride Treglown will be exploring this theme\, sharing examples of what biophilia means to him personally\, showing how nature-connectedness features in his and practice’s work\, and challenging us to imagine what a radical\, enticing and urgently-needed\, biodiversity-rich future might look like. He will also be talking through Stride Treglown’s ‘Tree of Dreams’ proposal for the Biophilic Bath exhibition\, which he is hoping will become a reality in 2025 \nRob Delius is an architect and Head of Sustainability for Stride Treglown. He was winner of the RIBA Imagine Bath Competition and was behind Stride Treglown’s Sinking House climate-awareness installation in 2021 and more recently instigated the Funeral for Nature event which campaigned for more action on biodiversity. He has produced the winning entry for RIBA competition: ‘Tomorrow’s Garden City: A Sustainable Approach to Living’ and was behind Stride Treglown’s runner-up entry for RIBA competition: ‘Re-imagining the Garden City’. He is also part of placemaking collective Architecture Is who held a Therapeutic City Festival a few years ago. He has been interviewed by and written articles for the Journal of Biophilic Design. \nStride Treglown are an employee-owned\, carbon-neutral\, multi-disciplinary architecture practice\, with about 25 employees in Bath. In 2022 they became a B-Corp\, the 1st architects in the top 100 in the UK to do so. B-Corps commit to balancing profit with people and planet.

SUMMARY:Talk: Natural Assets with Andrew Grant RDI at Museum of Bath Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Andrew’s talk explores the identity value of a ‘Biophilic City’ in ways that attract tourists and support stronger local communities. And how global cities such as Singapore\, Bangalore and Paris and Monaco\, manage and utilise ‘green and blue’ assets to their advantage. \nAndrew is a Landscape Architect whose work explore the connection between people and nature. He uses creative design to find solutions to the challenges of climate change\, biodiversity loss and improving quality of life\, health and wellbeing. Each of his projects responds to place\, ecology and people and promotes quality and innovation. In 2012 he was awarded the title of RSA Royal Designer for Industry in recognition of pioneering global work in landscape architecture\, such as Gardens by the Bay in Singapore which won the Building Project of the Year Award in the 2012 World Architecture Festival. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Sheffield\, an Honorary Fellow of the RIBA and a member of the National Infrastructure Commission Design Group. Based in the city of Bath he is Chair of the Bathscape Landscape Partnership and a member of the Bath World Heritage Site Advisory Board. He is also co-founder of the pop-up festival Forest of Imagination. In 2023 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by Bath Spa University in recognition of his outstanding work as a landscape architect and his passion and approach to nature\, creativity and imagination. \nThis talk supports the exhibition Biophilic Bath: The Green City You See\, which runs at the Museum of Bath Architecture until September.

SUMMARY:Communities of Food Growers Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Transition Bath for a walk that celebrates growing sites where local people tend crops to end up on their dinner plate. Both sites promote organic growing and regeneration of the soil as important contributions to addressing the climate crisis. \nWe will meet at the well-established community garden of Bath Organic Group at the Lower Common site. Here people grow and share crops amongst themselves\, as well as creating surpluses for the monthly Farmers’ Market stall. We will end at the Roots allotment site at Newbridge\, where individual plot holders grow for their own use. This walk offers contrasting examples of group gardening or individual gardening in a supportive community\, and encourages anyone to get involved! \nWhen we meet at 11am we’ll have short tours around the gardens and orchard\, and join the volunteers for their morning break: tea and cake for everyone. Then we’ll take the riverside path out to Newbridge where the Roots site manager will take us on a tour round the site and willingly talk about the no-dig principles they promote. You are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy it at the Roots allotment site before you depart. \nThe walk is 3 miles\, mainly level\, with a few steep steps and some rough ground on the approach to Roots site. We will note a few historical features along the river path. In general this walk is child-friendly\, but there is a long stretch along unprotected river bank where close supervision would be important. \nPlease note that dogs are not allowed on this walk. \nThe end point is close to the Upper Bristol Road\, offering buses back to the centre of Bath. Alternatively you could make your own way back along the riverside path\, or the Bristol-Bath railway path. \nWalk leaders are Lyn Barham and other members of Transition Bath and BOG. \nMeet at 11am at the gate into Lower Common allotments. This is opposite the Hop Pole pub\, and beside the entrance to the children’s play area.

DESCRIPTION:Join our Trustees Lyn and Alexander as we scour the Smallcombe Nuttery for nuts. By the calendar\, the cobnuts and walnuts should be in season\, as well as the glorious mulberries. Not nuts at all\, but still important! Signing up is appreciated for our records\, then turn up with fingers to pluck and eyes to search. \nWe’re on a mission to improve biodiversity at the Nuttery\, so we’ll also be making our first ‘wildflower scrapes’. Lend a hand with that\, and also spend a quiet 10 minutes monitoring a small patch of grass to see what you can spot\, either buzzing over or scuttling on the ground. We’ll be guided by some excellent resources designed by Marian Hill (Buzz & Scuttle). \nNOTE: as is the nature of nature\, there may not be any harvestable nuts on the evening\, though we have been checking and there were definitely plenty near harvest recently. SUMMARY:Soft fruit workshop - bottling demonstration and tasters
DESCRIPTION:Soft fruit is wonderful this time of year but it all often ripens at the once creating a problem of how to deal with it all. \nIn this workshop you’ll learn how to: \n\nPreserve your summer fruits by bottling (with or without sugar). Bottled fruit keeps well for a year at room temperature and is a good alternative to freezing fruit.\nMake a really rich redcurrant jelly that does not involve strigging the berries\nMake a fruit cheese (like a really thick jam) that does not involve stoning\, peeling or strigging fruit. This is useful method for dealing with cherries\, plums\, damsons\, gooseberries\, blackberries and windfall apples\, quinces and pears.\n\nYou won’t be making anything at this workshop but you’ll receive all the recipes and there will be tasters available of all the drinks. \nPlease bring a plate\, table knife\, spoon and cup. \nWe are asking for a donation of £15 to attend this 2-hour workshop. DESCRIPTION:We are holding our first Avon River Cleanup in collaboration with Bath Outdoors & E-Bike Hire on the 2nd June.\n\nWe are very excited to be collaborating for the first time with Darrock & the team at Bath Outdoors\, E-Bike Hire and Wild Swim Bike Run to hold a river clean up on both banks of the Avon. They are a fantastic local outdoors activity company with sustainability and respect for the environment at the heart of their business and so couldn’t be be better partners for doing some good for the river. Starting at Batheaston and running to Pulteney Weir\, we will be clearing the river of litter with two teams: one on paddle boards on the water and one on the bank.\n\nYou are welcome to take part in either group\, though a certain level of experience will be required for the paddle board team. For this reason\, there will be an age requirement of 14+ years for the paddle board team. The Bath Outdoors team will be on hand to provide health and safety guidance as well as teaching us about sustainable use of the river and the equipment we use to access it\, as well as how to respect the outdoors when we enjoy it. \nBath Outdoors have kindly offered to lend out the paddleboards for free on the day\, so this is a great opportunity to get out on the water while doing a lot of good in the process. If you would like to attend on either land or water\, please sign up for free (although we always appreciate donations to Transition Bath if you are able to) so that we know how many people intend to come. If we are over-subscribed with people wanting to be on the water\, then we can swap out at intervals. \nTo take part on the water\, you must be able to swim while wearing clothes with have some experience on the water. Everyone must be present for the Bath Outdoors health and safety talk at the beginning\, so latecomers will have to stay on land. Please feel free to bring your own water equipment if you so wish. DESCRIPTION:Litter-picking is a great opportunity for communities to come together – being outdoors is great for our mental health\, removing rubbish is great for wildlife and reducing plastic pollution is great for the environment. \nWe are holding a litter-pick event on the afternoon of April 7th\, starting at 14:30 at Green Park\, Bath BA1 1HZ and heading along the river to Norfolk Crescent Open Space Bath BA1 2SP. Everyone is welcome to come along and join us. \nWe will meet at 14:30 at the entrance to Green Park nearest to Sainsbury’s (///gallons.menu.cloak). \nParking is available at Sainsbury’s\, Green Park but is limited to 90 minutes. DESCRIPTION:Transition Bath is hosting a new Sustainability Shorts event on Friday 22 March with four speakers\, each talking for 10 minutes on a variety of themes with 5 minutes for questions after each talk. This event forms part of the Climate Hub Springtime Assembly\, at the Assembly Rooms in Bath from 22–24 March. Sustainability Shorts is a free event\, but you need to book a ticket to ensure a space. \nThe speakers and their themes are: \n\nPete Dyson\, Bicycle Mayor of Bath and author of Transport For Humans: Are we nearly there yet? will be talking about ”Shifting Perspectives: Tweaking Daylight Savings Time for a Brighter\, Greener Tomorrow!” If the clocks had changed last month\, what might have been the small but meaningful effects on our health and environment? How might it encourage walking\, cycling\, sports\, better road safety and even reduce utility bills?\nMarian Hill\, an illustrator (and founder of Buzz and Scuttle)\, who has become fascinated with our local native insect species\, will be introducing some of Nature’s invertebrate waste disposal experts who are busily tidying our local landscape and improving soil health in the process.\nCaroline Hickman\, University of Bath lecturer in social work and climate psychology\, will be discussing eco anxiety and distress about the climate and ecological crisis in children and young people globally.\nFacing the difficult truths of the climate emergency; apocalyptic disaster or transformational moment in history? \n“As we become aware of the scale and speed of the threats to the biosphere\, our emotional responses mirror our increased concern in both intensity and complexity\, and we need to navigate binary splits of hope and optimism and ‘doom & gloom’ pessimism. Eco anxiety\, grief and despair are all now recognised as understandable and rational human responses to the developing crisis. Conversations about climate change will bring us face to face with feelings of vulnerability and uncertainty\, but are also essential if we are to develop the emotional resilience that humanity needs to face this uncertain future.”\nAleksander Domanski\, documentary filmmaker\, biologist and photographer\, will give a talk on ‘Unveiling Subterranean Life’. He will be sharing his macro and microscopy filming to explore the interconnected private lives of key players in Britain’s nocturnal invertebrates. DESCRIPTION:Forget shop-bought pestos – this session will give you the skills to craft your own concoctions with foraged ingredients like nettle and wild garlic. It’s easy\, it’s tasty\, and it’s wild. \nOur guide\, local forager Ella Milburn (@everydayforaging)\, will show you how to spot the tasty herbs and greens that are hiding in plain sight all around us. We’ll go to a picturesque wild garlic spot in the woods and then have a wander to discover what else is around. You’ll learn what’s safe to eat and what’s not\, and learn about how to harvest wild foods sustainably. \nThis is a pleasant woodland trail taking you on a winding path through the farm fields and between the trees where you can enjoy the views over the countryside and keep an eye out for wildlife. This trail becomes very muddy\, especially in wetter conditions\, so appropriate footwear and careful footing are required. Some paths can also become overgrown so care with navigation is needed. \nAfterwards\, we’ll head back uphill to an indoor location for a demonstration of how to whip up a nature-infused pesto using fresh finds from our stroll. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nComfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for the weather\nWater bottle\nSmall basket or bag for collecting foraged items\nEnthusiasm for learning\, exploring\, and creating!\n\nWe are asking for a donation of £15 to attend this 2.5-hour workshop. DESCRIPTION:The Young Green Creators\, a group of young people with an aim to make accessible and inclusive climate-based events for young people across Bath\, is holding a weekend of activities from 15-17 March. \nTaking place primarily at Studio 22 in New Bond Street in Bath\, the event\, sponsored by House of Imagination\, will offer a range of activities from democratic and scientific education to more relaxed and creative activities\, all aimed at young people aged 16–25 years. \n“We noticed a niche in the climate justice movement in Bath that we wanted to fill – a lack of accessibility for young people in the climate movement\,” said Gracie Allen\, one of the team behind the Young Green Creators. “We are filled with the powerful enthusiasm to make change\, but we feel that we don’t have the resources or the spaces for this zeal to go anywhere – a feeling that can lead to worsening climate anxiety. \n“We wanted to combat this with an event specifically built with education\, fun and accessibility for young people in mind\, informed by their opinions from our focus groups and our own experiences.” \nFor more information\, follow the Young Green Creators at @youngreencreators on Instagram\, or contact them on younggreencreators@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Insect Declines\, Biodiversity and the State of Nature
DESCRIPTION:There is now good evidence that insect populations are declining worldwide in both agricultural and protected natural landscapes\, at about a rate of 1-2% per year. This doesn’t sound much\, but maintained over decades it has already led to a serious loss of both insect biodiversity and biomass. It’s likely that there are multiple causes\, including intensive agriculture\, especially pesticides\, as well as artificial light at night. Insects form the base of many ecological food chains and insect declines are likely to lead to a general loss of biodiversity. \nProfessor Stuart Reynolds (University of Bath) discusses evidence that insectivorous birds are already in trouble\, and examines what can be done about the problem. \nIn person at BRLSI\, 16-18 Queen Square\, Bath\, or online.
