SUMMARY:Avon River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:We are holding our first Avon River Cleanup in collaboration with Bath Outdoors & E-Bike Hire on the 2nd June.\n\nWe are very excited to be collaborating for the first time with Darrock & the team at Bath Outdoors\, E-Bike Hire and Wild Swim Bike Run to hold a river clean up on both banks of the Avon. They are a fantastic local outdoors activity company with sustainability and respect for the environment at the heart of their business and so couldn’t be be better partners for doing some good for the river. Starting at Batheaston and running to Pulteney Weir\, we will be clearing the river of litter with two teams: one on paddle boards on the water and one on the bank.\n\nYou are welcome to take part in either group\, though a certain level of experience will be required for the paddle board team. For this reason\, there will be an age requirement of 14+ years for the paddle board team. The Bath Outdoors team will be on hand to provide health and safety guidance as well as teaching us about sustainable use of the river and the equipment we use to access it\, as well as how to respect the outdoors when we enjoy it. \nBath Outdoors have kindly offered to lend out the paddleboards for free on the day\, so this is a great opportunity to get out on the water while doing a lot of good in the process. If you would like to attend on either land or water\, please sign up for free (although we always appreciate donations to Transition Bath if you are able to) so that we know how many people intend to come. If we are over-subscribed with people wanting to be on the water\, then we can swap out at intervals. \nTo take part on the water\, you must be able to swim while wearing clothes with have some experience on the water. Everyone must be present for the Bath Outdoors health and safety talk at the beginning\, so latecomers will have to stay on land. Please feel free to bring your own water equipment if you so wish. Drinking water\, snacks and sun screen/ hats are advisable. Let’s get paddling and clean up the Avon! \nGet your tickets

SUMMARY:Green Screen: Wilding + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Based on Isabella Tree’s best-selling book by the same title\, WILDING tells the incredible story of a young couple that bets on nature for the future of their failing\, four-hundred-year-old estate. \nThey set to work with their groundbreaking vision\, battling entrenched tradition and major forces along the way\, daring to place the fate of their farm in the hands of nature. Ripping down the fences\, they set the land back to the wild and entrust its recovery to a motley mix of animals both tame and wild. It is the beginning of a grand experiment that will become one of the most significant rewilding experiments in Europe and beyond. \nWILDING will be followed by an in-person Q&A with Isabella Tree.

Clifford\, Chasing The Sun explores extraordinary personal stories of ordinary cyclists chasing the sun\, revealing the power of the humble bicycle to transform lives and help save the planet.\n\nChasing The Sun also features contributions from broadcaster and ITV’s voice of the Tour de France Ned Boulting\, author and blogger Jools Walker\, Turner Prize-winning artist Sir Richard Long and four-time Mountain Bike World Champion Tracy Moseley.

SUMMARY:Sustainability Shorts: from wildlife gardens and eco-anxiety to changing time for a greener tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Transition Bath is hosting a new Sustainability Shorts event on Friday 22 March with four speakers\, each talking for 10 minutes on a variety of themes with 5 minutes for questions after each talk. This event forms part of the Climate Hub Springtime Assembly\, at the Assembly Rooms in Bath from 22–24 March. Sustainability Shorts is a free event\, but you need to book a ticket to ensure a space. \nThe speakers and their themes are: \n\nPete Dyson\, Bicycle Mayor of Bath and author of Transport For Humans: Are we nearly there yet? will be talking about ”Shifting Perspectives: Tweaking Daylight Savings Time for a Brighter\, Greener Tomorrow!” If the clocks had changed last month\, what might have been the small but meaningful effects on our health and environment? How might it encourage walking\, cycling\, sports\, better road safety and even reduce utility bills?\nMarian Hill\, an illustrator (and founder of Buzz and Scuttle)\, who has become fascinated with our local native insect species\, will be introducing some of Nature’s invertebrate waste disposal experts who are busily tidying our local landscape and improving soil health in the process.\nCaroline Hickman\, University of Bath lecturer in social work and climate psychology\, will be discussing eco anxiety and distress about the climate and ecological crisis in children and young people globally.\nFacing the difficult truths of the climate emergency; apocalyptic disaster or transformational moment in history? \n“As we become aware of the scale and speed of the threats to the biosphere\, our emotional responses mirror our increased concern in both intensity and complexity\, and we need to navigate binary splits of hope and optimism and ‘doom & gloom’ pessimism. Eco anxiety\, grief and despair are all now recognised as understandable and rational human responses to the developing crisis. Conversations about climate change will bring us face to face with feelings of vulnerability and uncertainty\, but are also essential if we are to develop the emotional resilience that humanity needs to face this uncertain future.”\nAleksander Domanski\, documentary filmmaker\, biologist and photographer\, will give a talk on ‘Unveiling Subterranean Life’. He will be sharing his macro and microscopy filming to explore the interconnected private lives of key players in Britain’s nocturnal invertebrates. Macro footage of soil organisms in action help to tell the story of how life under the surface affects the ecosystems above it\, and how this relates to our own food security and wellbeing.\nNote: There are many more free activities and workshops for all ages over the weekend including:Children’s nature celebration – craft activities\, storytelling and singing;\nMusic from Humm and the Climate Choir;\nYoung People’s Climate Café;\nBath Area Growers’ workshop on the importance of healthy soil;\nVarious stalls sharing information and ideas about positive action for a sustainable future.Everyone is welcome to come along to this free weekend. SUMMARY:Woodland foraging walk and wild pesto crafting
DESCRIPTION:Forget shop-bought pestos – this session will give you the skills to craft your own concoctions with foraged ingredients like nettle and wild garlic. It’s easy\, it’s tasty\, and it’s wild. \nOur guide\, local forager Ella Milburn (@everydayforaging)\, will show you how to spot the tasty herbs and greens that are hiding in plain sight all around us. We’ll go to a picturesque wild garlic spot in the woods and then have a wander to discover what else is around. You’ll learn what’s safe to eat and what’s not\, and learn about how to harvest wild foods sustainably. \nThis is a pleasant woodland trail taking you on a winding path through the farm fields and between the trees where you can enjoy the views over the countryside and keep an eye out for wildlife. This trail becomes very muddy\, especially in wetter conditions\, so appropriate footwear and careful footing are required. Some paths can also become overgrown so care with navigation is needed. \nAfterwards\, we’ll head back uphill to an indoor location for a demonstration of how to whip up a nature-infused pesto using fresh finds from our stroll. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nComfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for the weather\nWater bottle\nSmall basket or bag for collecting foraged items\nEnthusiasm for learning\, exploring\, and creating!\n\nWe are asking for a donation of £15 to attend this 2.5-hour workshop. We do not want to exclude anyone from attending based on cost\, so please change the donation amount if you are unable to pay the full price. \nBook your ticket

SUMMARY:Youth Climate Event
DESCRIPTION:The Young Green Creators\, a group of young people with an aim to make accessible and inclusive climate-based events for young people across Bath\, is holding a weekend of activities from 15-17 March. \nTaking place primarily at Studio 22 in New Bond Street in Bath\, the event\, sponsored by House of Imagination\, will offer a range of activities from democratic and scientific education to more relaxed and creative activities\, all aimed at young people aged 16–25 years. \n“We noticed a niche in the climate justice movement in Bath that we wanted to fill – a lack of accessibility for young people in the climate movement\,” said Gracie Allen\, one of the team behind the Young Green Creators. “We are filled with the powerful enthusiasm to make change\, but we feel that we don’t have the resources or the spaces for this zeal to go anywhere – a feeling that can lead to worsening climate anxiety. \n“We wanted to combat this with an event specifically built with education\, fun and accessibility for young people in mind\, informed by their opinions from our focus groups and our own experiences.” \nFor more information\, follow the Young Green Creators at @youngreencreators on Instagram\, or contact them on younggreencreators@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Insect Declines\, Biodiversity and the State of Nature
DESCRIPTION:There is now good evidence that insect populations are declining worldwide in both agricultural and protected natural landscapes\, at about a rate of 1-2% per year. This doesn’t sound much\, but maintained over decades it has already led to a serious loss of both insect biodiversity and biomass. It’s likely that there are multiple causes\, including intensive agriculture\, especially pesticides\, as well as artificial light at night. Insects form the base of many ecological food chains and insect declines are likely to lead to a general loss of biodiversity. \nProfessor Stuart Reynolds (University of Bath) discusses evidence that insectivorous birds are already in trouble\, and examines what can be done about the problem. \nIn person at BRLSI\, 16-18 Queen Square\, Bath\, or online.

SUMMARY:The three stories of our time and the role of radical uncertainty in a complex world – based on the Work That Reconnects
DESCRIPTION:An experiential workshop to explore how to relate to the complexity of the world’s predicament. How do we decide what to do when we cannot be certain of the outcome? What beliefs underpin the stories of the ‘Industrial Growth Society’\, the ‘Great Unravelling’ and the ‘Great Turning’? Exploring myths of separation\, scarcity and powerlessness. Clinical\, community\, and ecological psychologist Rosie Jones will introduce some of these ideas and offer experiential practices to feel into alternatives. \nThrough Psychology For Ecology Rosie offers workshops and facilitation to individuals\, groups\, organisations and communities seeking to participate in the ‘Great Turning’ to a life-sustaining culture. She is also directly involved in several social and land-based projects myself\, practising her learnings\, and learning through practice.

SUMMARY:Bath University I-SEE Lecture: My 50 year journey from Maths to Climate Change Activism – Fireside chat with Professor Tim Mays
DESCRIPTION:Prof Sir Brian Hoskins will talk about what has driven his research and his journey in the climate change issue. \nProfessor Sir Brian Hoskins\, Faculty of Natural Sciences\, The Grantham Institute for Climate Change \nAfter degrees in maths\, I have spent my research career trying to further the understanding of how weather systems and the large-scale atmospheric motion work. This has brought me into very close contact with those who do weather forecasting and those who research into all aspects of climate change. I have given many talks on climate change over the past 50 years\, and I have been involved with the IPCC and climate policy related committees in the UK\, including the Climate Change Committee. My concern for doing all I can to help tackle the climate problem led me to be the Founding Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College. \nBrian Hoskins has been a Professor of Meteorology in the University of Reading for 40 years. In 2008 he became the Founding Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London and is now its Chair. \nHis research interest has been in weather and climate\, in particular the understanding and modelling of the motion of the atmosphere on all scales. \nHis international roles include vice-chair of the World Climate Research Programme\, President of the International Association of Atmospheric Sciences and being a member of the 2007 IPCC climate change assessment for which a Nobel Prize was awarded. \nIn the UK he was a member of the UK Climate Change Committee for its first 10 years. \nHe is a member of the science academies of the UK\, USA\, China and Europe. \nBrian received a CBE in 1998 and was knighted in 2007 for services to the environment \nFurther information here: My 50 Year Journey From Maths To Climate Change Activism Tickets\, Tue 6 Feb 2024 at 16:30 | Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Sustainability Shorts: six 10-minute talks\, from wild foraging to sustainable business
DESCRIPTION:It’s time for Transition Bath’s second Sustainability Shorts event\, following the first in October 2023. This event features six speakers talking for 10 minutes each on a sustainability topic. The timing ensures that the evening is lively and the ideas snappy; all the better to spark ideas and kindle enthusiasm for adopting sustainability behaviours which help to mitigate the climate crisis. \nOur speakers for this sessions are: \nAnt Simpson – The surprising impacts of our food choices\nWith an MSc in Renewable Energy and Sustainability\, Anthony Simpson has worked in the fields of solar energy and the grid integration of electric vehicles\, and has co-led a company’s environmental programme. A climate change campaigner and researcher\, Anthony has compiled research across a broad range of topics to bring much greater clarity about the most important things we can do to respond to the growing threat of environmental collapse\, including climate change. \nMarieke Hammes – Sustainable business and carbon management \nPassionate about sustainable business\, packaging\, the circular economy and how to use nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change and create a more sustainable future\, Marieke has recently completed a Masters in Carbon Management with Distinction at the University of Edinburgh\, in association with the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute. \nElla Milburn – Foraging for the future: A wild alternative to global food systems\nElla Milburn (Everyday Foraging) is a Bath-based wild foods educator and sustainability writer. She shares practical knowledge on harvesting wild food through holding local workshops and advocates for the adoption of responsible foraging as part of the localised\, seasonal and sustainable food system of the future. \nHelen Haddon – EcoTogether for Sustainability\nAfter a lamentably unsustainable 20-year career working in international roles for a number of consultancies\, Helen left her job in 2014 and moved from London to Bath. In 2017 she set up a business to prepare the recruitment sector for the GDPR. Having sold the GDPR business just before the pandemic\, Helen has turned her attention to living a more sustainable and less hectic life. \nIzzy Sturges – Peat bogs and Sustainability\nIzzy Sturges recently finished her MSc in Visual\, Material and Museum Anthropology where she did ethnographic fieldwork with the Abbeyleix Bog Project\, Ireland. She will share insights and stories from this research\, talking about hope\, intergenerational renewal and community in the face of the climate crisis. \nMichael Malay – Sustainable Activism\nA writer and teacher based in Bristol\, Michael Malay spent his early years in Jakarta\, Indonesia\, before moving to Australia with his family at the age of ten. He is the author of Late Light\, a book about migration\, belonging and extinction\, and is now working on a book about John Berger. \nJoin the guest list
