This event features six speakers talking for 10 minutes each on a sustainability topic. The timing ensures that the evening is lively and the ideas snappy; all the better to spark ideas and kindle enthusiasm for adopting sustainability behaviours which help to mitigate the climate crisis. \nOur speakers for this sessions are: \nAnt Simpson – The surprising impacts of our food choices\nWith an MSc in Renewable Energy and Sustainability\, Anthony Simpson has worked in the fields of solar energy and the grid integration of electric vehicles\, and has co-led a company’s environmental programme. A climate change campaigner and researcher\, Anthony has compiled research across a broad range of topics to bring much greater clarity about the most important things we can do to respond to the growing threat of environmental collapse\, including climate change. \nMarieke Hammes – Sustainable business and carbon management \nPassionate about sustainable business\, packaging\, the circular economy and how to use nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change and create a more sustainable future\, Marieke has recently completed a Masters in Carbon Management with Distinction at the University of Edinburgh\, in association with the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute. \nElla Milburn – Foraging for the future: A wild alternative to global food systems\nElla Milburn (Everyday Foraging) is a Bath-based wild foods educator and sustainability writer. She shares practical knowledge on harvesting wild food through holding local workshops and advocates for the adoption of responsible foraging as part of the localised\, seasonal and sustainable food system of the future. \nHelen Haddon – EcoTogether for Sustainability\nAfter a lamentably unsustainable 20-year career working in international roles for a number of consultancies\, Helen left her job in 2014 and moved from London to Bath. In 2017 she set up a business to prepare the recruitment sector for the GDPR. Having sold the GDPR business just before the pandemic\, Helen has turned her attention to living a more sustainable and less hectic life. \nIzzy Sturges – Peat bogs and Sustainability\nIzzy Sturges recently finished her MSc in Visual\, Material and Museum Anthropology where she did ethnographic fieldwork with the Abbeyleix Bog Project\, Ireland. She will share insights and stories from this research\, talking about hope\, intergenerational renewal and community in the face of the climate crisis. \nMichael Malay – Sustainable Activism\nA writer and teacher based in Bristol\, Michael Malay spent his early years in Jakarta\, Indonesia\, before moving to Australia with his family at the age of ten. Once you have completed the course you will be able to borrow Transition Bath’s professional thermal imaging camera. \nThe training will be held in a cavity walled 1930s  home at the Odd Down end of Bloomfield Road. We have another training session on Wednesday 13th December close by\, which is in a 1870s solid walled home. We would generally advise attending a training event at a home most similar to your own if you can. \nTickets will be made available via the Transition Bath newsletter. A Year In A Field is not made by a climate scientist. It is a local\, lo-fi\, low-impact film – in contrast to the overblown\, blue-chip\, carbon-generating film productions that fly the globe in pursuit of unfamiliar wonders to address the climate emergency through tech-driven cinematic dazzle – more akin to science fiction. \nBAFTA-winning documentarian Christopher Morris invites us to slow down\, as he films for a year in a West Cornwall field; to immerse ourselves in this quiet\, direct-action of stillness\, to take a breath and reflect on the planetary impacts of our brief human existence\, under the watchful gaze of the Longstone\, an ancient monolith that predominates this elemental landscape. \nThere are no interviews or experts in this film. In fact\, there are no human beings at all; instead\, an unassuming Cornish field near Land’s End takes centre stage\, and a crop of spring barley forms the centre of an unfolding\, compelling and beautiful narrative. DESCRIPTION:I-SEE Sustainable Energy & the Environment Webinar \n‘Solar PV energy has become mainstream but what are the prospects for future developments’ \nProfessor Stuart Irvine Emeritus Professor\, Swansea University \nThe talk will reflect on progress made in just the past 10 years on power generation from solar photovoltaics (PV). Despite impressive progress for renewable energy in general\, and solar PV in particular\, the global use of fossil fuels has actually increased by over 8%. COP 26 made some stark warnings about the urgent action needed to avoid climate disaster. A total of 268 GW of new PV capacity was installed in 2022 with the accumulated total PV power exceeded 1 TW. The cost of PV power has fallen while gas prices have increased. The efficiency of PV modules has increased over the past 10 years from 15% to over 20%. The market is still dominated by crystalline silicon\, but emerging materials offer some exciting opportunities for future building integrated PV and what is being called “The Internet of Things”. Are there limits and what are they for future growth? The talk will explore some exciting future opportunities\, such as Space Based PV\, and make some bold predictions. \n  \nProfessor Stuart Irvine is an emeritus professor at Swansea University having previously been Director of the Centre for Solar Energy Research (CSER) in Materials Science and Engineering. He is one of the pioneers for deposition of II-VI compound semiconductors by Metal-organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) for application to thin film solar cells and advanced thin film materials for the photonics industry. His career started out researching new methods for producing thermal imaging materials which is now a production process in the UK for very high-performance thermal imagers. He pioneered early research for in situ monitoring of MOCVD which led to a spin-out company. In the past 20 years\, Prof. Irvine has led major UK projects on solar PV research and consulted for First Solar Inc. This research has led to the publication of over 200 journal and conference publications and more than 10 patents. He has also published books on Solar PV and MOCVD. \nProfessor Irvine received his B.Sc degree in Physics from Loughborough University\, Ph.D in Physical Metallurgy and Science of Materials\, and D.Sc in Physics\, both from the University of Birmingham. Stuart was director of the £9.3M SPARC II WEFO project to build research capacity in solar PV technology. DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a day of diverse activities from speakers to stalls\, performances to art activities…all FAMILY friendly. \nXR south-west are the hosts but it will be attended from all organisations concerned about biodiversity loss\, environmental devastation\, climate change and global social injustice (often as a result of the latter). \nThe purpose of Bath is to build alliances\, lobby MPs and find ways of working together moving forward to bring about significant change. \nAccessible bus routes and parking to Victoria park is available. \nCovered and indoor (weather friendly) spaces: \n\nPerformance and speeches\nWorkshop\nArt space\nFamily space\nSwallows space\nWell-being\, quiet area and first aid\nSpecific stands\nSome refreshment on site\n\nBristol art blockers will be printing onto T shirts\, bags\, etc…bring them along! \nTimeline: \n\n8am: Start\n10am: Spaces and activities used\n10:30 – 12 noon: There will be a silent faith vigil outside Barclays (XR Buddhists\, Christian Climate Action and other faith groups)\n12 noon – 2pm: Preparing for the accessible non-disruptive march that avoids the big rugby match on the day! (XR have liaised with experienced and sympathetic police officers in advance.) Everyone is welcome to dress up if you’d like to in a theme that suits the day e.g. animals\, fire or dirty water themes\, etc… There may be a discobedience at some point…dancing and there will be a samba band to keep our spirits up!\n2 – 5pm: Resume of workshops\, performance\, speeches\, stalls\, networking. There will be an inclusive community assembly.\n5pm: Tidy up time\n\nDogs are allowed on a lead. If the weather is atrocious\, there may be a last minute change of plans regarding the march. \nAlso needed are well-being (e.g. buddying) volunteers and stewards. \nPlease share this event and hope to see you there!

DESCRIPTION:I-SEE Sustainable Energy & the Environment Webinar \nThe role of policy for accelerating energy innovation to meet climate goals \nProfessor Laura Diaz Anadon\, Professor of Climate Change Policy Director\, Centre for Environment\, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (CEENRG)\, Department of Land Economy\, University of Cambridge \nInnovation in clean-energy technologies is central to achieving a net-zero energy system. While the pace of innovation in some key energy technologies has exceeded expectations\, faster progress in these and a wider range of technologies is necessary to meet climate goals. It has long been argued that\, among other actions\, governments should increase support for clean energy research and development and support early markets. There is\, however\, a more limited understanding of how to design these policies and institutions or what else may be needed. There is also growing recognition of that fostering a just transition is essential and not a given and an interest in the role of green industrial policy in many parts of the world. In this talk Prof Anadon shares key insights regarding what we have learnt over the past decade regarding how to foster a just energy transition\, covering experiences from industrialized countries and emerging economies\, as well as analysis of policies and institutions from R&D to deployment and finance. \n  \nProf Anadon will summarize what we have learnt about the drivers of innovation in key energy technologies and the policy structures and processes that could help support efforts to build a net zero economy. \nProfessor Laura Diaz Anadon holds the chaired Professorship of Climate Change Policy at the University of Cambridge\, where she directs the interdisciplinary Centre for Environment\, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (CEENRG) (add hyperlink to CEENRG: https://www.ceenrg.landecon.cam.ac.uk/ ) at the Department of Land Economy. An engineer-economist by training\, Professor Anadon is also a Fellow of St. John’s College and a long-standing Affiliate of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) at Harvard University. Her research on energy\, climate and innovation policy assesses the drivers of technological change in key energy technologies\, the impact of different policies on technological innovation\, economic\, and distributional outcomes\, and the interaction between science and technology and policy making. She is a Lead Author of the latest Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Working Group III on Mitigating Climate Change. Among other roles\, she serves as elected Vice-Chair of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change and on the Board of Cambridge Enterprise. SUMMARY:I-SEE Public Lecture: Harnessing The Oceans’ Energy
DESCRIPTION:Professor Deborah Greaves OBE\, FREng FICE FRINA\, Director of the Supergen ORE Hub\, University of Plymouth \nOffshore renewable energy (ORE) has long been recognised as having huge potential. The UK has the second-highest tidal range in the world and there are estimates that around 50% of Europe’s tidal energy resource and 35% of European wave resource lies in UK waters. The UK’s offshore wind infrastructure\, contributed over 10% of the UK’s power in 2020 and the offshore wind capacity target is 50GW by 2030. The Crown Estate recently published plans to support Floating Offshore Wind (FOW) in the Celtic Sea to deliver 4GW by 2035\, extending to 20GW by 2045. Professor Deborah Greaves will outline the key areas of research in developing our offshore renewable energy. She will introduce the Supergen ORE Hub highlights and future plans and will also present on a new initiative to support High End Computing in Wave Structure interaction. \nProfessor Deborah Greaves OBE \nDeborah Greaves is a Professor of Ocean Engineering\, was Head of the School of Engineering\, Computing and Mathematics at the University of Plymouth\, and is one of the UK’s leading offshore renewable energy researchers. \nIn a career spanning more than two decades\, she has consistently pioneered the development of new technologies in offshore wind\, wave and tidal power. This has included novel types of wave energy converter\, analysis methods for offshore renewable energy farms and extreme wave-structure interactions. \nIn addition to her research\, Professor Greaves has led high-profile national and international initiatives designed to ensure such technological advances can be applied in real-world scenarios to help meet the country’s future clean energy demands. \nShe was selected by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council to head its £9million Supergen ORE Hub\, has provided expert advice to organisations across industry and society\, and is a strong advocate for women in STEM subjects. \nProfessor Greaves was made an OBE in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to Marine Renewable Energy\, Equalities and Higher Education. \nIn 2020\, she was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering\, and listed by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) among its Top 50 Women in Engineering: Sustainability. SUMMARY:Bathscape Walking Festival - Community Green Fingers Walk
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Bathscape Walking Festival\, Transition Bath will be leading a walk that explores community involvement in growing trees and crops. \nFrom Lansdown P&R we take a level walk through fields with stunning views over Weston and the distant countryside\, before dropping down through fields to Primrose Hill Community Woodland. We’ll meet one of the woodland volunteers who will give a brief history from the millennium planting\, and take us on a ramble through the 14 acre woodland. The wood is rich with trees\, undergrowth and wildlife\, criss-crossed by paths and has useful information boards – a delight for people of all ages. \nWe anticipate spending about an hour exploring the woodland\, then will walk on down through quiet private roads (with one very short\, busy section) to visit a community garden in Park Street\, and meet some gardeners. From there\, we will walk through streets to end on the Gravel Walk\, finishing near Queen Square\, from where it is a short walk to the Milsom Street bus stop for those who need the bus back to Lansdown P&R. \nLocation: Starting at Lansdown Park and Ride\, finishing near Queen Square.

SUMMARY:Bathscape Walking Festival - Food on Our Plates Walk
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Bathscape Walking Festival\, Transition Bath is leading a walk that celebrates growing sites where local people tend crops to end up on their dinner plate. \nThe first visit is to the new Roots allotment site at Newbridge\, where individual plot holders grow for their own use. After an introduction to this organic\, no-dig site\, we‘ll join the riverside path back to near the city centre\, with a brief summary of points of historical interest along the way. \nThe second visit is to the well-established community garden of Bath Organic Group at the Lower Common site. Here people grow and share crops\, as well as creating surpluses for the monthly Farmers’ Market stall. \nLocation: The walk is three miles\, starting at Newbridge Park & Ride and finishing at the Lower Common site\, on the Upper Bristol Road (where you can get the bus back to the P&R).
