SUMMARY:Aviation Decarbonisation: Issues\, Challenges and Actions for Change
DESCRIPTION:I-SEE Sustainable Energy & the Environment Webinar \nAviation Decarbonisation: Issues\, Challenges and Actions for Change \nAndrew Chadwick\, Ecosystem Director Air Mobility & Airports\, Connected Places Catapult \nGlobal CO2 emissions from aviation have quadrupled since the 1960s and aviation accounts for 2.5% of global emissions\, not counting non-CO2 effects. If the sector does not act now to address this it is forecast that aviation will\, by 2050\, account for almost 40% of global emissions. \nThis presentation will present the case for why we need to decarbonise aviation now\, how can this be achieved\, the policies to support it\, and what it means in practice. \nIt will also provide examples of current initiatives\, plus provide an overview of the work that Connected Places Catapult are delivering on zero emission airports and fuel infrastructure to address these. \nAndrew Chadwick is a Chartered Engineer and is the Ecosystem Director Air Mobility & Airports at the Connected Places Catapult. Andrew leads on Future Air Transport\, Advanced Air Mobility\, and Aviation Sustainability innovation initiatives. His work includes Solution Architect on a wide number of Future Flight Challenge air mobility and aviation sustainability projects\, the UK Government Drone Pathfinder Catalyst Programme\, plus Designer and Solution Architect of the Zero Emission Flight Infrastructure project studying the introduction and transition of hydrogen and electric aircraft and supporting infrastructure into airports and airfields. \nAndrew is a Member of the Jet Zero Council Zero Emission Flight Infrastructure Subgroup\, a Member of the UK Government Future of Flight Industry Group\, Member of the Industry Advisory Boards for the Autonomous Vehicle Systems and Dynamics MSc and Applied AI MSc at Cranfield University\, a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Working Group on the Safety and Ethics of Autonomous Systems\, a member of the UK Government Drones Industry Action Group\, and a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society Remotely Piloted Aircraft & Autonomous Systems Specialist Group Committee.

SUMMARY:Green Screen: Food for Profit + Panel
DESCRIPTION:Food For Profit is the first feature documentary that exposes the links between the meat industry\, lobbying\, and the corridors of power. A five-year investigation that denounced how Europe is transferring hundreds of billions of taxpayers’ money into the hands of intensive farms\, which mistreat animals\, pollute the environment\, and pose a potential danger for future pandemics. \nDirectors Giulia Innocenzi and Pablo D’Ambrosi\, along with their team of investigators\, take us on an enlightening but shocking journey across Europe\, where they confront farmers\, corporations\, and politicians. Travelling across Europe\, they infiltrate farms across Europe\, exposing the truth behind the perceived excellence of European dairy and meat production whilst also infiltrating high level powers in Brussels and gaining shocking information. \nGreen Screen is a community-led space to discuss the environmental issues raised in the films we show. Everyone is invited to continue the conversation after the film in the cinema’s bar or cafe – enjoy a free tea or filter coffee when you bring a keep cup! \n\nGet your tickets here.

SUMMARY:COP29 Azerbaijan: International co-operation for a sustainable future
DESCRIPTION:The 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29)\, will take place in Baku\, Azerbaijan\, from 11 to 22 November 2024. With global temperatures hitting record highs\, and extreme weather events affecting people around the globe\, COP29 will bring together leaders from governments\, business and civil society to find solutions to the defining issue of our time. A key focus of COP29 will be on finance\, as trillions of dollars will be required for countries to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect lives and livelihoods from the worsening impacts of climate change. \nCOP29 will be a key moment for countries to present their updated national climate action plans under the Paris agreement\, which are due by early 2025. If done right\, these plans will limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and double as investment plans advancing the Sustainable Development Goals. But what if it fails to secure an agreement that will secure these goals? This BRLSI event brings together a panel of local & national experts on climate change and the sustainability transition – questions welcome! \nThe panel will include Penny Tranter\, former BBC weather forecast presenter and Met Office advisor; Theresa Löber\, Head of Climate Project Team at the Bank of England; Stuart Reynolds\, Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of Bath; James Spincer\, postgraduate student of Climate\, Policy and Politics at the University of Birmingham; and will be chaired by Chad Staddon\, Professor of Resource Economics and Policy at in the University of the West of England (UWE). \nThis meeting has been co-organised with the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Meteorological Society.

SUMMARY:Webinar for owners and occupiers interested in retrofitting listed buildings
DESCRIPTION:Owners and occupiers of listed buildings are invited to attend a two-hour webinar that will help them to understand how they can save energy while also conserving their property. \nThe webinar on Monday 11 November is being organised by the grant-funded Green Heritage Homes project\, a collaboration between Bath & North East Somerset Council\, Bath & West Community Energy (BWCE)\, Bath Preservation Trust\, the Centre for Sustainable Energy and People Powered Retrofit\, which aims to improve understanding of energy efficiency works to listed buildings. \nThe event will feature talks from several of the partner organisations: Bath & North East Somerset Planning & Conservation team will talk about applying for Listed Building Consent; BWCE will be outlining the retrofit services it offers to help owners and occupiers; and Bath Preservation Trust will be discussing how the historic significance of a building is assessed when considering energy measures. \nThe webinar is a repeat of one held in May\, which was attended by more than 80 people. \nCouncillor Sarah Warren\, Deputy Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency and Sustainable Travel at Bath & North East Somerset Council\, said: “The webinar will help homeowners and occupiers of listed buildings to understand how they improve the energy efficiency of their homes while conserving their property. Every individual action taken also helps to support our ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030.” \nAs part of the Green Heritage Homes project\, the council recently launched a Level 0 pre-application advice service that allows owners and occupiers of listed buildings to discuss possible measures with a conservation officer at the initial stages of a potential retrofit project. \nThe Energy Efficient Listed Buildings webinar will be held on MS Teams on Monday 11 November\, 9.30am to 12.00pm. You can sign up for the free event using this link. \nThe Green Heritage Homes project is funded with £344\,308 from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero\, working with the South West Net Zero Hub through the government’s Local Energy Advice Demonstrator Programme (LEAD). Service Level 0 pre-applications will be part of the Green Heritage Homes project until the end of March 2025. \nMore information about Green Heritage Homes can be found on the BWCE website \nThe Service Level 0 pre-application is exclusive to listed buildings (Grade II\, II* and I). Interested homeowners can apply on the council website\, or contact the conservation officer alexandra_best@bathnes.gov.uk to find out more. \nSign up now

SUMMARY:Air Pollution and Environmental Justice lecture
DESCRIPTION:Substantial differences exist in both concentrations of outdoor air pollutants and the distribution of emission sources across the UK. How these differences are experienced by individuals\, however\, is unclear. \nSome studies show that lower socioeconomic households\, certain minority ethnicity groups and particular age groups are more exposed to emissions sources and higher air pollution concentrations. These groups may also have elevated exposure related to modes of travel and occupation. Factors affecting disparities associated with indoor air pollution\, including from damp and mould\, cooking\, cleaning\, smoking and heating are also complex. \nThe concept of “environmental justice” is used to assess differential effects of interventions and policy in the United States\, but it is not widely researched or applied in the UK. However\, the UK’s many comprehensive\, open-access government datasets provide opportunities for such differential effects to be further assessed. This lecture will explore how such research can help inform policy decisions. \nThis talk is jointly organised with the Royal Geographical Society. \nProfessor Jo Barnes is Director of the Air Quality Management Resource Centre\, University of the West of England\, Bristol. She has almost 20 years’ research experience in air quality management\, policy and practice at local\, national\, European and international levels. She has worked with and on behalf of numerous local authorities\, Defra and the Devolved Administrations of Scotland\, Wales\, Northern Ireland and Greater London\, other Member States\, the EEA and the European Commission to implement and develop air quality management policies and practices.

SUMMARY:Hedge laying – your chance to learn a traditional skill
DESCRIPTION:The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) and Transition Bath have partnered to offer two days of learning and hands-on practice with CPRE’s skilled hedge-layer. \nHedge laying is a traditional country skill intended to create a strong\, dense living hedge. By laying a hedge you not only create a living fence\, you also help to encourage new growth\, making it an excellent way of regenerating an old\, overgrown hedge without replacing it. It’s a skill that is best learnt from a craftsperson\, and we offer that chance. You will be working in a group of volunteers led by CPRE’s hedge-layer\, gaining real work practice on one of the Nuttery’s overgrown hedges. \nSpaces are limited and must be attended if we are to maximise our time with our hedge expert so please be certain that you can make the appointment before booking. Please include a contact number so that we can keep you up-to-date on what is required for the day. \nWe will be outside for most of the day\, so please dress accordingly and bring a stout packed lunch and plenty of water. Sustaining cakes will be provided!

SUMMARY:TALK: Restorative Connections with Rob Delius
DESCRIPTION:With our fragile planet facing huge environmental threats right now\, there is no better time to question our relationship with the natural world – how we can live more in harmony with our environment and invite the beauty of nature into our own lives\, physically and spiritually. \nRob Delius of Stride Treglown will be exploring this theme\, sharing examples of what biophilia means to him personally\, showing how nature-connectedness features in his and practice’s work\, and challenging us to imagine what a radical\, enticing and urgently-needed\, biodiversity-rich future might look like. He will also be talking through Stride Treglown’s ‘Tree of Dreams’ proposal for the Biophilic Bath exhibition\, which he is hoping will become a reality in 2025 \nRob Delius is an architect and Head of Sustainability for Stride Treglown. He was winner of the RIBA Imagine Bath Competition and was behind Stride Treglown’s Sinking House climate-awareness installation in 2021 and more recently instigated the Funeral for Nature event which campaigned for more action on biodiversity. He has produced the winning entry for RIBA competition: ‘Tomorrow’s Garden City: A Sustainable Approach to Living’ and was behind Stride Treglown’s runner-up entry for RIBA competition: ‘Re-imagining the Garden City’. He is also part of placemaking collective Architecture Is who held a Therapeutic City Festival a few years ago. He has been interviewed by and written articles for the Journal of Biophilic Design. \nStride Treglown are an employee-owned\, carbon-neutral\, multi-disciplinary architecture practice\, with about 25 employees in Bath. In 2022 they became a B-Corp\, the 1st architects in the top 100 in the UK to do so. B-Corps commit to balancing profit with people and planet.

SUMMARY:Communities of Food Growers Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Transition Bath for a walk that celebrates growing sites where local people tend crops to end up on their dinner plate. Both sites promote organic growing and regeneration of the soil as important contributions to addressing the climate crisis. \nWe will meet at the well-established community garden of Bath Organic Group at the Lower Common site. Here people grow and share crops amongst themselves\, as well as creating surpluses for the monthly Farmers’ Market stall. We will end at the Roots allotment site at Newbridge\, where individual plot holders grow for their own use. This walk offers contrasting examples of group gardening or individual gardening in a supportive community\, and encourages anyone to get involved! \nWhen we meet at 11am we’ll have short tours around the gardens and orchard\, and join the volunteers for their morning break: tea and cake for everyone. Then we’ll take the riverside path out to Newbridge where the Roots site manager will take us on a tour round the site and willingly talk about the no-dig principles they promote. You are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy it at the Roots allotment site before you depart. \nThe walk is 3 miles\, mainly level\, with a few steep steps and some rough ground on the approach to Roots site. We will note a few historical features along the river path. In general this walk is child-friendly\, but there is a long stretch along unprotected river bank where close supervision would be important. \nPlease note that dogs are not allowed on this walk. \nThe end point is close to the Upper Bristol Road\, offering buses back to the centre of Bath. Alternatively you could make your own way back along the riverside path\, or the Bristol-Bath railway path. \nWalk leaders are Lyn Barham and other members of Transition Bath and BOG. \nMeet at 11am at the gate into Lower Common allotments. This is opposite the Hop Pole pub\, and beside the entrance to the children’s play area.

SUMMARY:BRLSI talk: Putting Climate Change Solutions on the Supermarket Shelf
DESCRIPTION:Tackling human-induced climate change requires solutions at every level; how about in the supermarket? \nIn this talk at BRLSI (and also online)\, Professor Chris Chuck will give an overview of three major projects that he has led over the last few years where the team has taken a fundamental scientific idea\, modelled the economic and climate impacts and further developed the technology through to commercialisation. These include: developing a biodegradable\, seaweed alternative to petroplastic packaging\, producing an edible oil to replace palm oil made from a yeast grown on waste food\, and developing sustainable\, alternative food products directly from grass. \nWho knows what you’ll find next time you go to the shops! \nProfessor Christopher J Chuck\, Department of Chemical Engineering\, University of Bath

SUMMARY:Nut Harvest at the Smallcombe Nuttery
DESCRIPTION:Join our Trustees Lyn and Alexander as we scour the Smallcombe Nuttery for nuts. By the calendar\, the cobnuts and walnuts should be in season\, as well as the glorious mulberries. Not nuts at all\, but still important! Signing up is appreciated for our records\, then turn up with fingers to pluck and eyes to search. \nWe’re on a mission to improve biodiversity at the Nuttery\, so we’ll also be making our first ‘wildflower scrapes’. Lend a hand with that\, and also spend a quiet 10 minutes monitoring a small patch of grass to see what you can spot\, either buzzing over or scuttling on the ground. We’ll be guided by some excellent resources designed by Marian Hill (Buzz & Scuttle). \nNOTE: as is the nature of nature\, there may not be any harvestable nuts on the evening\, though we have been checking and there were definitely plenty near harvest recently. If no nuts are available then this event serves as an object lesson in squirrels and humility. \nGet your tickets

SUMMARY:Biophilic Bath - The Green City You See
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition at the Museum of Bath Architecture presents creative visions for engaging with nature in urban areas. Biophilic Bath – The Green City You See\, from 10 July – September\, will feature designs by innovative architects\, engineers\, and designers\, which show future ‘biophilic’ visions of the city. Exhibition entrance is included in the cost of Museum entry. \nBiophilic design is defined as “design which focuses on those aspects of the natural world that have contributed to human health and productivity in the age-old struggle to be fit and survive”. The exhibition will present a variety of radical ideas that intrigue\, delight and energize\, and inspire the future sustainability and climate resilience of the city. \nAlex Sherman\, CEO of BPT\, says: “From 2024 developers in the UK will be required to increase the biodiversity of their sites by 10% under the new biodiversity net gain legislation\, so city greening and sustainability are priorities now – not just in the future. \nJoanna Robinson\, Sustainability and Design Manager at BPT says: “Each of these imaginative site-specific biophilic design responses includes direct or indirect experiences of nature\, incorporates low carbon materials and urban greening and nurtures the love of Bath and its unique landscape setting. SUMMARY:Soft fruit workshop - bottling demonstration and tasters
DESCRIPTION:Soft fruit is wonderful this time of year but it all often ripens at the once creating a problem of how to deal with it all. \nIn this workshop you’ll learn how to: \n\nPreserve your summer fruits by bottling (with or without sugar). Bottled fruit keeps well for a year at room temperature and is a good alternative to freezing fruit.\nMake a really rich redcurrant jelly that does not involve strigging the berries\nMake a fruit cheese (like a really thick jam) that does not involve stoning\, peeling or strigging fruit. This is useful method for dealing with cherries\, plums\, damsons\, gooseberries\, blackberries and windfall apples\, quinces and pears.\n\nYou won’t be making anything at this workshop but you’ll receive all the recipes and there will be tasters available of all the drinks. \nPlease bring a plate\, table knife\, spoon and cup. \nWe are asking for a donation of £15 to attend this 2-hour workshop. We do not want to exclude anyone from attending based on cost\, so please change the donation amount if you are unable to pay the full price. \nGet your ticket
