SUMMARY:Faultlines 4: Lifestyle change & regulation in climate policy
DESCRIPTION:Lifestyle change has been a cornerstone of green thinking since the 1970s. We have had critiques of consumerism\, ‘voluntary simplicity’\, steady-state economics\, and many claims that a simpler life is preferable. The key aim is to ‘do one’s bit’ to avoid a future in which damaging climate change will adversely affect everyone. Many people already gain personal satisfaction from their voluntary attempts to achieve such a lifestyle\, but in fact\, such people are a small minority. Actually\, there is clear evidence that over society as a whole carbon emissions rise steadily with increasing household income\, and that a few hundreds of  billionaires are responsible for a million times more greenhouse gases than the average person. \n\n\nThis is why some experts say that encouraging mass adoption of lifestyle change is not a useful strategy in climate policy. Instead\, what is needed is top-down regulation of emissions. After all we don’t allow people to “decide” how they will dispose of their sewage\, do we? But such regulation might be politically very difficult to achieve. \n\n\nThis is the fourth in a series of all-day sessions at BRLSI\, in which a panel of experts will discuss and answer your questions on a significant ‘Faultline’ within current sustainability policies. He will talk about this work which has led to recently being awarded the prestigious Murchison award by the Royal Geographical Society for his global contributions to understanding wildfires. \nProfessor Stefan Doerr is based in the geography department at Swansea University. The workshop uses a discovery/game approach whereby participants link cards in order of the causes and consequences of climate change. The resulting collage rolls-out on its own without preaching and complicated explanations enabling participants to easily understand how planetary life will be impacted. Learn how to feel empowered to take action and to spread the word. Meet others in your community who share your concerns and discuss the positive action you can take. \nJoin Share and Repair on the Lower Bristol Road in Bath. Share and Repair is a local environmental charity supporting borrowing over buying new and repairing over replacing items. Melusine Pigeon\, a volunteer repairer and also a lecturer in sustainability at the University of Bath\, will be facilitating this session. DESCRIPTION:Friends of Whitewells Green\, with support from the council parks team\, are hosting a community tree planting session at Whitewells Green. \nThey’ll be planting around 70 young native trees\, replacing losses from previous years and helping strengthen the long-term landscape of the green. There will also be some mulching on the day if there are enough hands. \nThis is a relaxed\, practical session for anyone who enjoys doing something tangible outdoors. You’re very welcome to come along for the whole morning\, just plant one tree or lend a hand for a short while – every contribution helps. \nNo experience is needed. There’ll be guidance on the species being planted and how to look after them as they establish. Please bring a spade if you have one and dress for wet ground and winter weather. Children are welcome with supervision. \nWhitewells Green is a much-loved local space and what’s planted on the day will be part of the landscape for decades to come.

Architect & Sustainability campaigner Robert Delius of the firm Stride Treglown was the driving force behind The Sinking House in the Avon for Cop 26 & the visually stunning & powerful Funeral for Nature. He will show us what has been done in other cities\, where an area of waste ground or a barren balcony has been transformed with the introduction of trees\, shrubs & vines. And then Rob will tantalise us with the vision of a greener Bath. \nIn the past Bath rated highly for urban trees; and we still have some amazing historic specimens but\, overall\, we have dropped down the list to number 37. Trees give so much: shade\, heat absorption\, reduction in flooding\, slowing traffic\, building a sense of calm even healing . DESCRIPTION:Unconditional tells the stories of people who participated in and ran the workfree basic income pilot. \n‘What would it mean to help the poor without preconditions? To address the precarity at the heart of poverty? And to stand in solidarity with\, rather than offering charity to\, those who are marginalised and forgotten? \nUnconditional tells the story of two inspiring policy experiments in India and Bangladesh. Combining unconditional basic income with community organiser support across five slums in Dhaka and Hyderabad\, these experiments showed what is possible when social assistance is rooted in principles of care\, connection\, and justice. Told through the stories of participants\, this 30-min documentary points towards a future where unconditionality is the foundation stone of social policy’. \nWe will be joined for a Q&A with the film’s producers and directors following the screening. SUMMARY:Community Energy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:An interactive workshop exploring the future of community energy at Hinton Hall\, Church Street\, Tisbury\, Wiltshire SP3 6NH\, on Thursday 26 March 2026\, from 6pm-8.30pm. \nThis friendly\, welcoming session is open to everyone and no prior knowledge is needed. There will be a free buffet and you will be guided step by step through what community energy is\, where there may be potential for renewable energy in your area\, and how local projects could directly benefit your community. \nPossible locations for renewable energy generation will be explored\, along with how schemes such as solar or wind could be shaped by local people. Community energy puts decision-making in local hands\, keeps financial benefits within the area\, and supports transparent\, informed choices about the future. \nIf you need support to attend\, such as help with childcare or travel costs\, you can request this. \nAfter the workshop\, a wider community survey and further engagement will gather additional views. A public report will share all findings and may help guide future projects locally. \nThis partnership project is led by the Centre for Sustainable Energy\, working with Wiltshire Council and local community energy groups\, and is funded by the Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Scheme. \nBook tickets.

SUMMARY:Stargazing at Earth Hour
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating dark skies by switching off\, looking up\, and reflecting on our shared responsibility and love for the night sky and the planet. \nJoin us in Bath on 28th March for a magical evening under the stars as we mark Earth Hour together. As lights switch off around the world\, the night sky comes alive. This is an invitation to slow down\, look up\, and experience the beauty of the cosmos while reflecting on why protecting dark skies and reducing light pollution matters for people\, wildlife\, and the planet. \nTransition Bath are organising this event in collaboration with Bath Astronomers\, whose members will guide us through the night sky and help you use telescopes to see far beyond what the naked eye can spot. No experience needed\, just curiosity and a sense of wonder. \nOn the night\, an 81.7% waxing Moon will shine high above us. Astronomical twilight begins at 19:49\, leading into Earth Hour from 20:30–21:30. If conditions are clear\, we expect stunning views of the Moon\, Jupiter and its four Galilean moons\, and possibly Uranus. Venus will glow earlier in the evening after sunset\, and we may also spot passing satellites amongst all the constellations. \nWe’ll meet at 20:00 just outside Victoria Park (exact location shared after booking)\, then walk together into the park at 20:15. Earth Hour begins at 20:30\, followed by an hour of stargazing\, guided telescope viewing\, and gentle reflection. You’re welcome to share with others in our discussion points or simply enjoy the quiet awe of the night. If you have one\, please bring a folding chair\, especially if standing for long periods is difficult. \nWhat is Earth Hour?\nEarth Hour is organised annually by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and encourages people worldwide to switch off non-essential electric lights for one hour\, typically from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time on the last Saturday of March as a symbolic gesture of environmental responsibility and climate action. \nTo mark Earth Hour\, we encourage you to: \n\nSwitch off your home lights during Earth Hour\nEncourage local businesses to do the same\nWe’ll be sharing simple resources and ideas in the lead-up to the event and we’ll be taking part ourselves.\n\nImportant note about weather\nStargazing depends on clear skies. DESCRIPTION:Join Transition Bath and Climate Hub for an evening of Vision Boarding for the Climate! \nWe’re exciting about this one: a creative climate workshop inviting you to imagine the future you’d love to live in\, and to begin thinking about how we might actively move towards it. Through collage\, we’ll create vision boards that explore positive ecological and climate futures for ourselves\, our communities\, and the wider world. \nHow will the session work? Guided by thoughtful prompt cards and evidence-based insights into positive environmental solutions\, this relaxed session offers space to slow down\, tune into what matters to you\, and express it creatively. No artistic experience is needed\, just curiosity and an interest in working towards a better climate and ecological future. \nAlongside making\, there will be opportunities for calm\, informal conversations about the climate\, hope\, and possibility.
