‘The evolution of economic regulation of the energy sector to reflect Net Zero’

A presentation and discussion on how the role of regulation has developed over time & how this might need to change further in the future.
The energy system has gone through a number of changes in recent years, and this is expected to continue, with the government’s announcement that it will seek to decarbonise the power system by 2030. In this talk, Gavin will talk about how the economics of the energy system are expected to change, and the implications for Ofgem’s regulation over the next few years.
Dr Gavin Knott is the Chief Economist at Ofgem and works on both regulation of network monopolies and on using economic analysis to help assess how competition and regulation can work together in the consumer interest in energy markets. Gavin has nearly 20 years’ experience working in competition and regulation across the UK’s infrastructure sectors, working as a regulator and in the private sector. Gavin also has a PhD in financial economics.
