Rod has been a trustee of Transition Bath since March 2003. Now retired, he is the former chair of the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales (2004–7). He is the author of many books and articles on criminal justice and penal policy and has been a regular broadcaster, speaker and writer. His interests include walking, sailing and live music. He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Bath Philharmonia (2008–15) and has been a Trustee on the Bath Festivals Board.
