The average car in England is driven for just 4% of the time and spends 73% of its time parked at home. We believe there is an opportunity to reduce car ownership and the amount of Bath roads allocated to parking by expanding car clubs. This is a particular problem in narrow residential streets with multiple occupancy housing.
We have spoken to the only car club provider in Bath (Enterprise Mobility) – who run a car sharing network across the UK about what is feasible and have asked the Council why there are no specific targets. We have suggested that as Brighton has 10 times as many car club spaces as Bath for only a 40% larger population, BANES’s target for car clubs should be as proportionately ambitious. Our engagement on this issue is through the West of England Future Transport Zone Equalities Group.
