The Somer Valley Links (SVL) project, a major transport scheme for Bath & North East Somerset, is currently open for public consultation until 16 March. The initiative aims to enhance sustainable travel options between Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Bath, and Bristol by improving bus infrastructure and creating better opportunities for walking, wheeling and cycling. Key proposals include the introduction of eight new mobility hubs, upgrades to 22 bus stops, nearly a kilometre of new bus lanes, and significant improvements to active travel networks. Funded by the Department for Transport and part of the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) programme, the project seeks to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and connect rural areas to urban centers.
The SVL project covers a wide area, from Whitchurch through Pensford, Clutton, Temple Cloud, Farrington Gurney, and the Somer Valley, extending northwards to Bath. Proposed improvements include over 5km of footway upgrades, 3km of new footways, more than a kilometre of new cycleways, and 25 new pedestrian crossings. Mobility hubs will feature upgraded bus shelters, shared mobility options (e.g., car clubs or bike hire), and improved pedestrian and cycling facilities. Specific locations, such as Temple Cloud, Farrington Gurney, and Bear Flat, will see tailored enhancements, including widened footways, signalised crossings, and reduced speed limits. The project also aims to improve bus journey times and reliability through new bus lanes and priority measures.
Councillor Sarah Warren, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency and Sustainable Travel, emphasised the project’s potential to make sustainable travel more accessible and convenient. However, the scheme involves some reallocation of road space and a reduction in on-street parking in certain areas, which has prompted the council to seek extensive community feedback. Public consultation events are being held across the region, and residents are encouraged to share their views to ensure the project meets local needs. If implemented, the SVL project could significantly enhance connectivity, reduce emissions, and promote healthier, more sustainable travel options across Bath and North East Somerset.
